The Great Smoky Mountains

What is it that draws more than nine million visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains each year? Is it the fine mountain air, the beautiful smoky haze created by high humidity and the various off-gassing of local flora, or the abundance of outdoor activities to enjoy? No matter the reason, the Smokies possess a certain allure that cannot be denied. Take one glance at the sweeping mountain vistas and it’s easy to see why more and more people are purchasing homes for sale in the Smoky Mountains.

Well-known as the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains is Clingmans Dome, standing at 6,643 feet. Besides being the highest point in the state, Clingmans Dome is also the second-highest point east of the Mississippi River, surpassed only by Mt. Mitchell in North Carolina. One interesting fact about Clingmans Dome is that it is located on the state line, meaning half of it lies in North Carolina and half in Tennessee. A large observation tower is accessible by car (followed by a steep but short hike), providing spectacular views. On a very clear day, you can see seven states, and visibility can exceed 100 miles. Be sure to plan ahead for your day trip to Clingmans Dome, as snow is common between September and May, and the access road is closed from December through March.

Cades Cove, arguably the most popular location in the Great Smoky Mountains, was first settled by Europeans in 1818. Prior to this, the area was part of the Cherokee Nation hunting grounds, and wildlife was abundant, including river otters, elk and bison. Even today, many arrowheads can be found in the region. By 1850, the total population of Cades Cove was 685, but the Civil War divided the people and the terrors of war caused the Cove community to become fiercely independent. Sometime around the turn of the century, the logging industry came to the Smoky Mountains, creating jobs and improving the local economy, but destroying the environment in the process. The Park movement began in the early 1920s, and most residents sold their land to the Park to create the Smoky Mountains park as we know it today.
