History of Maryville, Tennessee

What is now known as the City of Maryville was once nothing more than a settlement at Fort Craig, on Pistol Creek. In 1795, the City of Maryville was established in Blount County, even before Tennessee was officially a state. Fifty acres of land were soon acquired, divided and sold to construct necessary town buildings, including a courthouse and jail. A fair portion of Maryville was destroyed or damaged by fire during the Civil War, but the original courthouse remained intact.

Maryville College was renamed as such in 1842, although the institution was originally created as the Southern and Western Theological Seminary in 1819. In 1868, the first railroad was built in the area, known as the Knoxville and Charleston, and soon after, Maryville’s first public school was opened. Over time, new services and transportation venues were added, accumulating to create the modern Maryville we know today. Many historic buildings still stand in downtown Maryville, and residents and city officials are committed to preserving the town’s rich history. Bookmark and Share
