The Allure of the Smoky Mountains

Nature lovers will revel in the diverse array of flora and fauna found among land for sale in the Smoky Mountains. More than 230 species of birds may be found within the Great Smoky Mountain Park itself, with more than 100 species that breed in the park. Birdwatchers can keep their eyes peeled for mourning doves, barn swallows, red-winged blackbirds, indigo buntings, eastern bluebirds and meadowlarks, barred owls, pileated woodpeckers, and wild turkeys, among others. Golden eagles are often spotted during the fall. The range of elevation in the Smokies is so dramatic that some birds in the area actually migrate vertically, traveling up and down the mountains rather than from north to south.

The Summit of Beauty

Whether or not you choose to invest in Smokey Mountain real estate with a view, you must travel to the highest point in the Smokies to take advantage of the most spectacular vantage point in the area. Clingmans Dome stands at 6,643 feet above sea level, the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains. Take the winding road as far as you can go, within 300 vertical feet of the peak, and then you can walk the path to the observatory at the top. On a very clear day, you can see as many as seven states, with 360-degree panoramic vistas. Besides being the highest point in the state of Tennessee, Clingmans Dome is also the second-highest point east of the Mississippi River.

If you prefer a more relaxed adventure, you may enjoy the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, an 11-mile nature trail designed to be viewed from the comfort of your automobile. Large passenger vehicles such as RVs and buses are not allowed on the trail, which winds through the verdant mountain wilderness. This trail offers surprisingly lovely water views including rapids, cascades and waterfalls, in addition to sun-filtered light through the pines, oaks, hardwoods and hemlocks. For a special treat, drive the trail in early July to see the abundant pink blossoms of the many rhododendrons.
